Our Process
Whether you prefer an organic, natural shape or an elegant, turned design that looks more polished, you’re covered with Carshawen. We can create a diverse range of wand types, shapes, and sizes tailored to your preferences.
Length — Wands may be up to 16 inches in length.
Material — Every wand crafted is either 100% solid wood, or solid wood with resin accents. Our common stock includes cedar (brown and red), elm, oak, maple, pine, wild cherry, peach, zebra wood, mahogany and others. We can look to acquire the necessary lumber if we don’t keep it in stock.
Build — Each wand crafted through Carshawen Wand Co has its own unique identity, and as such, the techniques used to create each wand vary from wand to wand. Wands can be shaped in many ways, and can be turned on a lathe, shaped with a belt or orbital sander, or whittled by hand. Most utilize some combination of each method. From there, the shape is hand sanded with sand paper and files to improve the shape and finish. Once the shape is complete, each wand can be spray or hand painted using different methods, such as a paint wash or dry brushing, to achieve the desired aesthetic. A protective clear coat completes the process.
Custom Wands
In addition to the standard inventory at our Wand Shoppe, Carshawen can craft a custom wand just for you! You can find more details on our dedicated Etsy Shop. Once purchased, we’ll converse through Etsy messages to determine the shape, style, size, etc. of your wand. You can supply any inspiration or images to help communicate your vision. Once that’s done, we’ll get to work! Wands typically take 1-2 weeks to craft once a design is finalized. This process consists of two phases:
Discovery — we’ll discuss in general terms what type of wand you’re looking to get made. There are three areas to discuss — shape, color, finish. We complete them in that order. If you have something specific in mind, we’ll discuss that as well. The more descriptive you can be, the better. You can supply any pictures that represent what you’re looking for here as well. If you don’t have anything specific in mind, that’s fine too! We can brainstorm ideas until we get to something we like.
Creation — once we get a decent idea of what direction to go in, I’ll work up a rough shape and send it over to get your thoughts (and feel free to be honest about whether you like it; we sell wands at conventions, etc. also, so if you don’t like it, I’ll be able to use it elsewhere). Once you feel good about it, I’ll clean it up to get a final shape and send it over for your approval. Then we’ll transition to the details like color, sheen, etc. After this, we’ll have a finished product!
